چکیده

BACKGROUND Soft tissue foreign bodies are a common cause of orthopedic consultation in emergency departments. It is difficult to confirm their existence because conventional radiology only detects radio-opaque foreign bodies. Sonography can be a useful diagnostic method. The aim of this study is to evaluate diagnostic accuracy of sonography in detection and localization of non-opaque foreign bodies. METHODS We evaluated 47 patients with suspected foreign body retention in soft tissues by 10 MHz linear array transducer. A single radiologist performed all examinations with 6 years' experience in musculoskeletal Sonography. We detected and localized the presence of the foreign body in the soft tissue as guidance for facilitating the surgery. RESULTS We detected soft tissue foreign body in 45 cases as hyperechoic foci. Posterior acoustic shadowing was seen in 36 cases and halo sign was seen in 5 cases due to abscess or granulation tissue formation. Surgery was performed in 39 patients and 44 foreign bodies were removed. CONCLUSION Sonography is a useful modality in detection and localization of radiolucent foreign bodies in soft tissue which can avoid misdiagnosis during primary emergency evaluation.

Percutaneous ultrasound guided extraction of non-palpable soft tissue foreign bodies.

Ultrasound is being increasingly used in the diagnosis of the soft tissue foreign body (FB), in particular for the nonradio-opaque materials which may not be visualized with conventional radiography (Fornage & Schernberg 1986). A simple technique for ultrasound guided FB extraction under local anaesthesia is described, and comment is made upon our preliminary experience and pitfalls.

SELF-INDUCED FOREIGN BODY GRANULOMAS DUE TO INJECTION OF ELEMENTAL MERCURY

A 24-year-old girl injected approximately I ml of elemental mercury from a few broken thermometers to her right cubital fossa. It led to the formation of a tumoral lesion which was erythematous, lobulated, painful, with secretory sinuses in the injected area. Biopsy showed foreign body granulomas with metallic mercury that appeared as dark opaque globules. X-rays showed metallic densities i...

Surgical Removal of Neglected Soft Tissue Foreign Bodies by Needle-Guided Technique

Introduction: The phenomenon of neglected foreign bodies is a significant cause of morbidity in soft tissue injuries and may present to dermatologists as delayed wound healing, localized cellulitis and inflammation, abscess formation, or foreign body sensation. Localization and removal of neglected soft tissue foreign bodies (STFBs) is complex due to possible inflammation, indurations, granulat...

Lateral Soft Tissue X-ray for Patients with Suspected Fishbone in Oropharynx, A thing in the past

Introduction: Fishbone is the most common foreign body found in the oropharynx. Conventionally patients with suspected fishbone in the throat would have mirror laryngoscopy followed by lateral soft tissue X-ray to look for the fishbone or observe impacts caused by the fishbone i.e. soft tissue swelling or air in upper esophagus. However, the most common site of fishbone impact is the suprahyoid...

Detection of soft tissue foreign bodies in the presence of soft tissue gas.

OBJECTIVE To determine the effect of soft tissue gas on the accuracy of foreign body detection by realtime sonography. METHODS This was a prospective randomized study using glass, metal, and bone inserted into turkey breasts to simulate human soft tissue foreign bodies. Air was subsequently injected around a random selection of the foreign bodies to simulate soft tissue gas that can accompany...
